Troy Kash-Brown

Class of '84, College of Arts and Sciences

Lincoln, Nebraska

Troy wrote to reflect on Doane since he is nearing his retirement:

" After 32 years in the career of a firefighter, I have 14 months left to retirement. Sue Kash, who was the first Foreign Student adviser at Doane's "new" ESL institute, and I have been married 33 years with two daughters. After graduating from Doane in 1984, I was enticed to travel to New England, where Susan was studying for her masters. We moved to Burlington, Vermont, where Susan worked as a Foreign Student Adviser. I worked in several jobs: cheesemaker, lifeguard, and Maine summer camp trip director. In the end, I became a firefighter in the Burlington Vermont Fire Department. Ironically, the mayor was Bernie Sanders. We moved back to the Lincoln area to farm with my grandparents and be close to the family as our children were born. Two months after ending my firefighter job in Burlington, I started working for the Lincoln Fire Department, farming with my grandparents and building a new home on our farm right on the highway that ten years prior, I had driven to Doane on from Fremont. Eventually, I became a Certified Organic farmer, full-time firefighter, and father. Susan coordinates the ESL program at Southeast Community College and is a great mom.

It has been a wild ride since I started attending Doane College in 1979 during the Phil Heckman era, who once told us that Doane was like a protective uncle letting you experience new things in life but only to a point. My experience during that time at Doane allowed me to learn many things academically, extracurricular, and about myself. The world has changed a great deal since Reggie Gomendo and me, who was from Rhodesia and then Zimbabwe, moved into Frees Hall. My hope is Doane, now University will continue to improve the world for us all."
