Dependent students need to provide personal and parent income information. Independent students need to provide personal and spousal (if applicable) information.
Use one of the following means to submit income information:
- Import tax information directly to your FAFSA with the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (no need to submit additional information).
- Submit a 2017 Tax Return Transcript (available from the IRS), W-2's and Sch. C and/or F if self-employed.
- Submit a signed copy of 2017 federal income tax returns, W-2's and Sch. C and/or F if self-employed.
We have found the easiest way to obtain the IRS tax information is for you to update your FAFSA by using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT).
Please note: the DRT cannot be used if the tax return filer is married and filed their tax return as either head of household or married filing separately.
