Human Relations

The Human Relations major is designed for persons seeking careers in human service professions. It combines studies in the fields of psychology, sociology, human relations, and communication. Coursework focuses on human development, personality theory, interpersonal and group communication, multiculturalism, professional ethics, and developing counseling skills.

Graduates work in positions in the fields of social/community services, criminal justice, corrections, child welfare, gerontology, and a variety of non-profit settings. Coursework in the Human Relations major also prepares graduates to continue beyond a bachelor’s degree to an advanced degree in counseling and management.

Earn Life Credit

Undergraduate students have the opportunity to document their prior learning from work/life experiences through a portfolio option. This gives students the ability to showcase their experiences by connecting their work/life experiences to the outcomes of formal education and curriculum. Portfolios are assessed and evaluated to allow as many as 30 credits to be earned and applied toward a degree program.

Flexible Classes

Classes are offered to fit an adult learner’s needs! Courses are typically offered in 8-week terms to provide flexibility and to help make an adult student’s already full schedule more manageable and attainable. Online classes are completed fully online while on-campus evening courses meet once per week for each course.

Social and Community Services Manager/Administrator

Social and community service managers coordinate and supervise social service programs and community organizations. They work for nonprofit organizations, private for-profit social service companies, and government agencies.

Probation/Parole Officer and Correctional Treatment Specialist
2018 Median Pay: $53,020 per year

Probations officers and correctional treatment specialists provide social services to assist in rehabilitation of law offenders in custody or on probation or parole. 

Child Welfare Specialist
Median Pay: $48,198 per year
Job Outlook: +11% from 2018-2028
A Child Welfare Specialist ensure a suitable environment, medical care and schooling. They also supervise care through home visits, and make decision for the child such as whether to remove them from their current home. Other aspects of the job include updating client files, preparing court reports, investigating potential neglect cases, and managing volunteers. 

Child and Family Social Worker
Median Pay: $38,420 per year

A Child and Family Social Worker provides services and assistance to improve the social and psychological functioning of children and their families. They maximize the family's well-being, as well as the academic functioning of the children. They may also, assist parents, arrange adoptions, and find foster homes for abandoned and abused children.  

Training and Development Manager

Requirements for the Human Relations Major:

Complete one of the following emphases:

General emphasis:

Students may select the general emphasis area. Students will be required to complete an ethics course, BUS 365  or CRJ 420 , and nine additional credits hours selected from the Communication, Criminal Justice, or Leadership emphasis areas. 

Information on courses for LADC

Doane University has an opportunity for a limited number of students to receive free tuition and fees to complete the course work for the Provisional Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor certification (PLADC). The funding is offered through the Behavioral Health Education Center of Nebraska (BHECN) and includes a $750 stipend to purchase a laptop or pay for textbooks. The goal of BHECN’s student-training program is to increase the number of behavioral health professionals in Nebraska, especially in rural and underserved areas. There is a great need for addiction counselors in Nebraska, so career growth is strong.

This opportunity is available to bachelor’s level students and non-degree seeking students. Students apply for funding through BHECN. Undergraduate students complete 8 courses and 300 hours of clinical experience in order to apply for the PLADC. Graduate students in the Master of Arts in Counseling program are eligible to receive for funding for three graduate-level courses that meet the PLADC requirements.

A new degree program, Substance Use Counseling, includes all of the course work for the PLADC. Students who are interested in learning more about the Substance Use Counseling degree, or funding the opportunity through BHECN should contact their advisor to discuss the best course of action.

The Human Relations major includes a 12-credit emphasis area.

The emphasis areas will allow students to tailor their degree program to match their educational and professional goals. Students will have an opportunity to build and refine their knowledge and skills in the emphasis area selected through their internship experience.
