Gilbert to present at national music educators conference

As someone who is known for always having a positive impact in the classroom, Dr. Danni Gilbert has been given two great opportunities to represent Doane outside the classroom, sharing her knowledge and experience with other music educators in higher education.

 

Gilbert recently had the honor of presenting her research at the Florida Music Educators Conference (FMEA) in a session entitled “Curious, Collaborative Creativity: 21st Century Artistry for All Ensembles.” Gilbert, an associate professor of music and director of the Tiger Pep Band, presented with Dr. Caron Collins from the Crane School of Music at SUNY-Potsdam.

 

Gilbert shared her results of applying the CCC approach with the Tiger pep band, which gave students more opportunities to select, arrange, and compose the music performed. As Gilbert explains, it gave students more experience in teaching and conducting, a director-centered approach to learning.

 

Gilbert has also been selected to present three different sessions at the National Association for Music Educators (NAfME) Music Research and Teacher Education National Conference in Atlanta, Georgia March 22-24. The three sessions Dr. Gilbert will present include:

 

  • “It’s Just the Way I learn! Inclusion from the Perspective of a Student with Visual Impairment”

  • “Gender Equality in Higher Education: An Investigation of Gender Stereotypes Among Conductors and Students in B1G Performing Ensembles”

  • “Curious, Collaborative Creativity: Addressing Diversity through Democratic Processes”

 

“This conference is a great opportunity to share ideas and research with other collegiate music education professors,” Gilbert said.

 

This will be the second time in a row Gilbert has presented at the biennial conference. Only 28 percent of proposals from music educators to present are accepted, so the fact Gilbert will present three different sessions is quite the honor.

 

“I believe it’s important to work on these projects to benefit the students,” Gilbert said. “I see it as mutually-beneficial; the students teach me things and then I try to find ways I can share those ideas with other teachers to help them with their students. It makes me feel like I’m making more of an impact than just the students at Doane.”
