Religious Studies

College of Arts and Sciences

Location: Crete
Degree Type:

Doane University’s Religious Studies program encourages students to think critically about the major religious traditions of our world, as well as their scriptures, stories, rituals, practices, beliefs and aesthetic expressions.

It is not our mission to advocate a specific religious practice or belief. Instead, we support our students to engage in beliefs and practices in an empathetic fashion, in an effort to understand other belief systems as well as their own.

Majoring in Religious Studies allows students to access primary historical texts as well as modern scholarly writings. Analyze ancient and modern religious traditions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam as well as the impact these beliefs and traditions have on the arts and popular culture.

Program Information

With a degree in religious studies, students have many opportunities to fulfill their calling in different aspects of their communities. From counseling, ministry, humanitarian efforts and teaching, you will have the skillset to think critically, speak persuasively, and better understand how religion shapes people as members of society.

Through the understanding of different cultures, histories, and points-of-view, students will be able to understand the motivations, convictions and actions of the people they are trying to support.

Catholic Newman Club

Catholic Newman Club provides a Christ-centered atmosphere in which students can grow in their faith and develop a personal relationship with Jesus. Any student is welcome to be a part of the group. Members should have the willingness to learn more about Jesus Christ and His Church and develop a personal relationship with Our Savior.

Doane Cru

Campus Crusade for Christ exists to put the Gospel in arm's reach of every student on campus. We strive for this by offering weekly opportunities for fellowship and worship, as well as evangelism and small and large group Bible studies. These opportunities facilitate encouragement amongst students in their own relationships with others as well as their relationship with God.

P.A.L.A.C.E. (Pagans About Living And Creating Energy)

P.A.L.A.C.E. stands for "Pagans About Living and Creating Energy" and our mission as a student organization is to create a welcoming, peaceful, and informative space for those of pagan background, belief systems, or interest. We want our members to have somewhere to relax and learn while being completely accepted and respected. We hope to educate our fellow students on the mythology and history of all forms of paganism. We welcome all who may want to join, be that out of faith or just interest.

Fellowship of Christian Athletes

The mission of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes is "to present to coaches and athletes, and all whom they influence, the challenge and adventure of receiving Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, serving him in their relationships and in the fellowship of the Church."

The best preparation for a career in ministry is a four-year liberal arts course prior to graduate work at a seminary. Students who are interested in religious education or missionary work, would benefit from an emphasis in Pre-Ministry.

They go out of their way to make sure you have what you need. I just wish I had known about it a long time ago.
